Swinging Both Ways. A new algorithm controlling a vertically oscillating pivot point can smoothly guide a pendulum from stable rotation (left, pivot is up when pendulum is up) to unstable rotation (right), where tiny fluctuations would ordinarily destroy the motion. Similar systems could someday be used to test vibrational stability in jet engines or bridge cables. (See videos below.)
