Flipping Bits. A weak, focused light beam can “write” and “rewrite” ones and zeros on a thin crystal of magnetic semiconductor. This 100-micron-long byte (8 bits) was initialized to binary 00000000, then changed progressively to 01110100, 00100100, and 11101110.
