Listening for neutrinos. The ANITA experiment flew on a balloon over Antarctica in 2006 to look for radio wave pulses generated by ultrahigh energy neutrinos hitting the ice. New calculations show that more neutrino energy might go into mesons than into photons, sometimes in reactions that involve many ice nuclei simultaneously, altering the expected neutrino detection signal in experiments such as ANITA.
