Slicing ice. A computer simulation shows a water-repelling nanowire cutting downward through ice by melting it with pressure. In this case, liquid water accumulates below the wire. The macro version of the experiment is a classic demonstration of water’s unusual properties; the nanoscale version illustrates the effects of surface properties on the behavior of water molecules.
