Figure 1: The PAMELA instrument was designed to identify and measure the charged particles that are present in cosmic radiation. Combined measurements from the magnetic spectrometer, calorimeter, time of flight (TOF) system, and neutron detectors shown here distinguish the incident particles by their charge, momentum, and mass.
