Figure 1: The “Pandemonium Effect” as discussed by J. Hardy et al., in 1977 [12] with a reference to John Milton’s Paradise Lost. The true picture of the decay of the neutron-rich parent nucleus ($\text{Z},\text{N}$), with many weak beta transitions and following low-intensity $\gamma$ transitions, is given. Evidently, the determination of the true beta strength function, the $\gamma$-deexcitation patterns, and their interpretation might suffer from undetected $\gamma$ radiation.
