Wobbling in place. A new technique detects each elementary charging event on a submerged, $1$-micron-wide plastic bead by applying a strong oscillating voltage to a pair of electrodes and measuring the bead’s oscillation amplitude. A laser trap (red) keeps the bead loosely anchored.
