Figure 1: A new quantum simulator uses two trapped ions to simulate the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard (JCH) model. Laser light (red) allows vibrational excitations, representing boson modes, to hop from one ion to the other. The laser light also allows vibrational energy to be exchanged with internal excitations, representing spin modes. The researchers show that the resulting spin-boson hybrid excitations are polaritons and that the polaritons go through a superfluid-insulator phase transition, as predicted by the JCH model.
