Figure 1: In a talk on Quantum Life, Seth Lloyd explained how quantum mechanics helps photosynthesis. He focused on the energy conversion process that occurs in complexes such as the one shown here, called LH2, from the bacterium Rhodospirillum molischianum. LH2 molecules gather photons as the first step in photosynthesis. The energy travels as excitons from LH2 to the reaction center complex (not shown), where it’s converted to chemical energy.
