Nanobrush. A nanoscale brush on the surface of a ceramic (top, scale bar is 200 nanometers) allows the material to withstand a sudden and dramatic change in temperature without cracking, which could be useful in industry. It was inspired by dragonfly wings (above, same scale), which repel water.
