(Top) The rates at which a susceptible individual becomes infected, an infected individual recovers, and a recovered individual becomes susceptible again are given by $p$, $r$, and $q$, respectively. In an adaptive network (bottom), the links between individuals at different stages of the disease can change (rewire) to reflect the fact that, for example, a susceptible may avoid contact with an infective. The rate at which the network can rewire is described by the parameter $w$.
