Physics, an online-only publication from the American Physical Society, seeks a full time editor to join its editorial team.

Physics provides daily news and commentary about a selection of papers from the APS journal collection. The new editor will be responsible for identifying appropriate papers for coverage, commissioning and editing commentaries (Viewpoints), and writing and editing short summaries (Synopses.) He/she will also be expected to contribute to editorials, press releases, and the promotion of Physics content via social media, lab visits, and conferences. As the job develops, the new editor may be asked to create and/or lead a section of the publication.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in physics or the physical sciences and two or more years of experience writing about science for a non-specialist audience. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred.

The job demands a highly organized and self-motivated individual who can distill technical results to an accessible message, balance many assignments, and work under tight deadlines. The new editor must have excellent communication skills, as he/she will work with a variety of professionals, including leading scientists, illustrators, web developers, and APS staff.

This position is officially located at the APS Editorial Offices in Ridge, New York, close to Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University, and 60 miles east of New York City. Partial telecommuting could, however, be negotiated. APS offers a competitive salary and an outstanding benefits package. For general information about the American Physical Society and its journals, see http://www.aps.org.

For consideration, send your resume and a cover letter that explains your interest in the position and includes your salary expectation, plus a 250-word Synopsis of a recent physics paper (for examples see http://physics.aps.org), to Joseph Ignacio, Director of Human Resources, Email: edresumes@aps.org. The deadline for applications is November 14, 2014.
