Douglas Scalapino received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1961 and did postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1968 he left the University of Pennsylvania physics faculty to join the University of California, Santa Barbara, physics department where he is presently a Research Professor. His research interests involve problems of strongly correlated electron systems and the pairing mechanisms of unconventional superconductors.
