David R. Jacobson is an assistant professor of chemistry at Clemson University in South Carolina. His lab uses atomic force microscopy to mechanically unfold individual membrane proteins, with the goal of understanding mechanisms of membrane-protein folding and the connections between membrane-protein misfolding and disease. He carried out single-molecule studies of membrane proteins as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Thomas Perkins at JILA in Colorado and of nucleic acids as a PhD student under Omar Saleh at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, the NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award, and the APS Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Biological Physics.
