Fulvio Parmigiani investigates materials driven far from equilibrium, uncovering transient phases and collective phenomena inaccessible at equilibrium. He received his degree in physics from the University of Milan and held research positions at CISE Research Center in Italy and at IBM Research - Almaden in California. He became a professor of physics at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1994 and joined the University of Trieste in Italy in 2004, where he has been emeritus professor since 2020. He founded the physics degree programs at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Brescia, Italy, and served as a professor on the international faculty of the University of Cologne in Germany from 2013 to 2024. He contributed to the conceptual design and led the scientific program of the FERMI free-electron laser in Italy from 2004 to 2015. He is a fellow of Elettra and of the American Physical Society.
