Wolfgang Bauer is a University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University (MSU). He earned his PhD in physics at the University of Giessen, Germany, in 1987. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology, he joined the MSU faculty in 1988. He has held positions at MSU as department chairperson (2001–2013), founding director of the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (2009–2013), senior consultant, and associate vice president (2013–2020). He was a coauthor of the 2012 MSU Energy Transition Plan and has spent the past decade working on implementing it. With coauthor Gary Westfall, he is the author of the University Physics textbook.
