Professor Neil Bourne holds a chair investigating Matter (materials and structures) under Extreme Conditions at the University of Manchester. He is a former Chair of the APS Topical Group on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter. He has published over 350 papers and a textbook on Materials in Mechanical Extremes. The research center he directs has facilities for experimental testing to define properties under mechanical and thermal loads, extending to modeling of the response of materials and structures. He directs a beam line in collaboration with the Diamond synchrotron to image material failure and advises the UK Health and Safety executive in regulations and risks in materials and structures.
