Björn Hof is a professor at the Institute of Science and Technology (IST), Austria, where he heads the group of nonlinear dynamics and turbulence. After obtaining his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Manchester, UK, in 2001, he carried out postdocs at Manchester and at the Delft University of Technology. From 2007 to 2013, he led a research group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen, Germany. He then assumed his position at IST. Key aspects of his research include characterizing the onset of turbulence as a nonequilibrium phase transition, developing a dynamical-systems description of coherent structures in turbulence, and investigating instabilities in complex fluids.

Searching for Order in Turbulent Flow

The observation of ordered flow patterns in a weakly turbulent liquid may lead to new ways of predicting the evolution of turbulent flow. Read More »
