He graduated from the University of Lisbon and received his Ph.D. in solid-state physics from the University of Grenoble in 1974. He then occupied several positions at Lisbon, Coimbra, Paris, and Saclay. He has performed many experimental studies of water at subzero temperatures using light, x rays, and neutron scattering. He is also a specialist of small-angle scattering applied to chemical physics and biophysics.
