Nicholas Bigelow is Professor of Physics and of Optics, and Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of Rochester, New York. His research is focused on the use of lasers to cool, manipulate, and study neutral atoms and molecules and to understand the interaction between light and matter. He has worked as invited researcher in the laser cooling groups at the Laboratoire Kastler-Brossel of the École Normale Supérieure and the Institute of Optics in Orsay, France, and at the University of São Paulo in Brazil.
