Philippe Roncin is a member of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) working at the Molecular Science Institute of Orsay, University of Paris-Saclay. He started his research in the area of atomic collisions, studying highly charged ions capable of removing hundreds of electrons at once when impinging on a metal surface. He developed position-sensitive detectors and multiple detector systems operated in coincidence, and he discovered the regime of fast atom diffraction at crystal surfaces, where kilo-electron-volt atoms manage to bounce on the surface without exciting surface vibrations.
