Tobias Galla is a staff scientist at the Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC) in Spain, jointly run by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of the Balearic Islands. Galla holds a degree in physics from the University of Münster in Germany and a PhD from the University of Oxford in the UK, where he worked with David Sherrington, a pioneer of spin-glass theory. His research focuses on the statistical mechanics of stochastic and disordered complex systems. This includes models of complex ecological communities, agent-based systems subject to intrinsic and extrinsic fluctuations, and biological and social populations.

How Migration May Stabilize the Diversity of Ecosystems

A model based on statistical physics suggests that the combination of species migration and interspecies interactions may allow a complex ecological system to maintain its diversity. Read More »
