William Allison is a life fellow of Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, UK, and emeritus reader at the university’s Department of Physics. His research is mainly concerned with experiments using molecular beams, and he has a particular interest in the interactions of atoms and small molecules on surfaces and nanostructures. He initiated several technical developments in instrumentation and was a leader in developing the helium spin-echo method for the study of surface dynamics. He was also involved in early work on the application of surfaces for atom focusing and pinhole microscopy.
