Sean McNamara obtained his Bachelor's degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California, San Diego. He then did postdocs in Rennes, Lyon, Stuttgart, and New York.  Since 2007 he has worked as an assistant professor at the University of Rennes 1. His research interests include many aspects of granular materials: their modeling, stability, acoustical properties, and the transfer of energy and mass within them.
